The Future of Gaming Smells, and It's Exactly as Bad as You'd Expect

PC gaming is awash in optional accessories, from RGB-laden RAM to graphics cards adorned with anime art. However, the Scentbar, a device designed to emit smells corresponding to on-screen action, represents a new peak of superfluous technology. Despite initial skepticism, a demonstration revealed that the device, while fundamentally unnecessary, actually works.

Swing and a Whiff

The Scentbar is a miniature soundbar-like device that sits on a desk. It connects to software that analyzes on-screen content and triggers corresponding scents from up to 10 interchangeable cartridges. During a demonstration at Gamescom, the device accurately emitted a bakery scent while the user navigated a virtual bakery. When the demonstration shifted to a car mechanic simulation, the Scentbar produced a "garage" aroma. In another instance, during gameplay of "Lost Legion," the device released a "fire" scent as a character was placed near a brazier.

The technology behind the Scentbar utilizes scent pellets stored in cartridges. Available scents during the demo included Forest, Grass, Pineapple, Flowers, Bakery, Sea, Farm, Smoke, and Gunpowder. The Scentbar's AI can be configured via its software to detect on-screen elements with varying degrees of sensitivity, allowing users to customize when scents are triggered. However, users cannot currently add their own custom scents due to safety regulations.

Functional Futurism

Previous attempts at scent-emitting gaming peripherals have reportedly fallen short, but the Scentbar appears to defy this trend. The device successfully identified and simulated environmental scents in games like Minecraft, producing aromas of grass and fir trees. The accuracy of the scents, such as "garage" or "gunpowder," was noted as surprisingly precise, despite the inherently absurd nature of bottling such smells.

While the Scentbar functions to a degree that is unexpectedly impressive, its practical necessity is highly questionable. The author concludes that while the device is a testament to innovation, it is something that players absolutely do not need. Experiencing the Scentbar at Gamescom was described as a worthwhile diversion, but not a compelling reason to purchase the product.
