This DIY Controller Costs Under $12 and Takes Six Hours to Build, But Would You Want To Use It?

For those seeking the absolute cheapest PC gamepad options, a new DIY project allows for the construction of a controller in approximately six hours for under $12. The project, dubbed the Undercooked V0.4, prioritizes affordability and simplicity over traditional gamepad features, resulting in a unique and minimalist design.

The controller eschews a D-pad and a full set of face buttons, instead featuring a single analogue stick, 'X' and 'A' inputs, a menu button, and a 'B' button positioned on the right shoulder. According to its creator, Lazy_Duck, the goal was to create a controller with easily and cheaply obtainable components, even from small electronics shops. To achieve this, the Undercooked V0.4 does not utilize a standard printed circuit board.

Instead, the build requires a protoboard equipped with an RP2040-Zero microcontroller. The creator describes the aesthetic as reminiscent of early East German electronics, highlighting its novelty given the limited input options. The shell is constructed from approximately 150g of 3D printed filament and assembled using heat-set threaded inserts, suggesting a degree of durability.

However, the design's focus on cost and simplicity comes with significant ergonomic drawbacks. The 3D printed ridges may prove uncomfortable during extended play sessions, and the completely flat back exacerbates this potential issue. Potential builders might consider sanding the exterior for improved comfort. Despite these ergonomic concerns, the Undercooked V0.4 stands as an interesting electronics project for those interested in building their own hardware, even if its usability as a primary gaming input is questionable.

For comparison, a more conventional budget option is the GameSir Nova Lite, which typically retails for under $30 and offers a more complete gaming experience.
