Unlock Enhanced Frame Generation on Your RTX 40-Series GPU with This Unofficial Method

Nvidia's Multi Frame Generation (MFG) technology, introduced to enhance frame rates and visual smoothness, was initially limited to the RTX 50-series graphics cards. However, a workaround now allows users with RTX 40-series GPUs to access some of the advanced capabilities of MFG, including up to 4x frame generation.

Nvidia's Frame Generation feature, which uses AI to create interpolated frames, debuted with the RTX 40-series in 2022. The more advanced Multi Frame Generation, capable of generating up to five frames for each rendered frame, was later restricted to the newer RTX 50-series architecture. This restriction was reportedly due to the specialized AI Management Processor (AMP) and Flip Metering technology within the RTX 50-series silicon, designed to optimize the delivery of both rendered and generated frames. Previous statements from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang suggested that bringing newer AI technologies to older generations would require significant engineering effort.

It is important to note that the method described here is not officially supported by Nvidia. Furthermore, Multi Frame Generation itself is not a perfect technology. Enabling higher levels of frame generation can potentially introduce visual artifacts such as smeared frames and increased latency, impacting the overall smoothness of the gaming experience despite higher reported frame rates. These issues can persist even with frame rate limiters in place, depending on the specific game.

Enabling 4x MFG on RTX 40-Series Cards

For those willing to experiment, the process involves using the ReShade HDR Installer (RHI) tool, available on GitHub. This software helps automate the installation of unofficial modifications.

  1. Download the ReShade HDR Installer (RHI) from GitHub.
  2. Verify that the target game supports Nvidia's DLSS Multi Frame Generation.
  3. Select the desired game from the RHI's left-side panel.
  4. Install the 'RTX 40 MFG' and 'OptiScaler' options.
  5. Navigate to 'Nvidia Profile Overrides' within RHI.
  6. Click the 'Multi Frame Generation' button and confirm the dialog box.
  7. In the 'Multi Frame Generation' settings, select 'Dynamic' for FG, 'Up to 4x' for Frame Count, and 'Off' for Target Frame Rate.
  8. Launch the game and enable the relevant in-game Multi Frame Generation option.

When using RHI, the tool should automatically detect installed games. Before proceeding, confirm that your chosen game is on Nvidia's list of supported titles for DLSS Multi Frame Generation to ensure compatibility. It is advisable to test this modification with single-player games, as some anti-cheat systems may flag unofficial software.

After installing 'RTX 40 MFG' and 'OptiScaler', locate the 'Nvidia Profile Overrides' section. Clicking the 'Multi Frame Generation' button will prompt a warning that MFG is officially supported only on RTX 50-series GPUs. Proceed by clicking 'OK' to open the configuration window.

Within this window, set 'FG' to 'Dynamic,' 'Frame Count' to 'Up to 4x,' and 'Target Frame Rate' to 'Off.' These settings are designed to enable the higher frame generation multipliers. After applying these settings, launch the game. The in-game graphics settings should then allow for the selection of Multi Frame Generation. The FrameView application can be used to confirm that the feature is active, especially if the game does not explicitly offer a 4x MFG option.
