Valve has made the complete CAD files for its Steam Frame VR headset publicly available, inviting a wave of community-driven customization and modification. The release includes design specifications for components such as the light blocker, head strap, battery housing, and facial interface, alongside the core module and controllers.
This move by Valve empowers creators to develop their own unique add-ons and replacements for the headset. The light blocker, in particular, is presented as a prime candidate for user replacement, suggesting an easy entry point for modders.
Valve itself is working on an upgraded head strap for the Steam Frame, which is expected to feature interchangeable batteries and off-ear speakers, similar to those found on the Valve Index. This accessory is slated for a release in the near future. The availability of CAD files also raises the possibility of third-party manufacturers offering alternative accessories.
The documentation also provides detailed information on how to interface with the headset's expansion port, referred to by Valve as the auxiliary port. Located near the user's nose, this port supports power and data transfer, including a Gen4 PCIe lane and camera functionality. This opens up possibilities for powered accessories, such as the Arcturus Vision RGB camera, which has been shown to be a significant enhancement.
This release follows Valve's previous provision of CAD files for its other hardware products, including the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Controller. With this latest release, Valve has now made the design specifications for its entire range of recent hardware accessible to the public.
