A recent leak originating from configuration files within Microsoft's Xbox Design Lab suggests that an updated version of the Xbox Elite Controller, potentially the Series 3, is on the horizon. These files, which have since been removed, reportedly indicated features such as the inclusion of Hall Effect or TMR (tunneling magnetoresistance) sticks, an audio scroll wheel, and revised paddle designs.
This is not the first time a new Elite Controller has been hinted at. In August, a user posted images of a purported prototype to Reddit. However, that leak offered few details regarding the controller's internal specifications. The latest leak, by contrast, appears to provide a clearer picture of the rumored high-end controller's potential features.
If these specifications prove accurate, the next iteration of the Xbox Elite Controller could significantly boost its competitiveness in the premium controller market. Durability has been a noted concern with previous models; one user reported thumbstick issues and a missing analog stick on their Series 2, along with a tendency for the controller to disassemble upon impact, scattering components like back paddles and the D-pad. Addressing such issues would be a welcome improvement.
The Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 has been praised for its exceptional battery life and comfortable weight. Should Microsoft manage to retain these strengths while integrating the newly leaked features, the Elite Controller could reclaim its position as a top-tier choice for PC and Xbox gamers. However, price will likely remain a crucial factor. The Series 2 controller still retails for around $167, a significant investment, especially in a market that now includes the $99 Steam Controller and the $129 Asus ROG Raikiri II. Microsoft's challenge will be to offer compelling upgrades without a substantial price increase to remain competitive.
