Amazon has reportedly removed an internal leaderboard designed to track employee usage of its Kiro AI development platform. The decision comes as the platform's use, particularly the creation of numerous agents, has led to significant expenses due to the costly nature of AI tokens.
Tokens are fundamental units of data that AI algorithms process, breaking down text or images into smaller chunks for computation. Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have increasingly shifted from flat subscription models to pay-per-token pricing as AI operational costs have surged. This has evidently resulted in substantial bills for Amazon.
According to sources cited by the Financial Times, the now-deprecated leaderboard may have been exploited by employees creating superfluous agents to inflate their usage metrics and climb the rankings. This behavior, termed "tokenmaxxing" by some, could have been driven by a company mandate encouraging widespread AI adoption, with some employees potentially acting out of fear of job displacement or a desire to appear productive.
Amazon has confirmed the leaderboard's removal, describing it as a "beta dashboard" that was "not a formal or approved tool" and has since been "deprecated." As AI adoption continues and token-based pricing models become more prevalent, many companies may re-evaluate their strategies for internal AI implementation if the return on investment does not justify the escalating costs.
