Bungie Announces Significant Layoffs, Affecting Destiny 2 and Marathon Teams

Bungie has announced substantial layoffs that will affect "most of the Destiny team," along with some developers working on the upcoming title Marathon and employees at Sony Interactive Entertainment who supported the studio. Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony's Studio Business Group, stated that the decision was made after exploring alternatives to align studio resources with current priorities and long-term objectives.

In a statement, Hulst emphasized that Marathon remains an important part of Sony's portfolio, and the company will continue to support the team as they build upon the game's foundation and work on future incubation efforts. While Marathon appears to be secure for the time being, its long-term future remains unconfirmed.

Bungie itself commented on the situation, attributing the cuts to the conclusion of Destiny 2's final content update and the early incubation phase of its future projects. The studio stated it could no longer operate at its previous size. The scale of these layoffs suggests a significant reduction in Bungie's workforce, following several previous waves of job cuts at the developer in recent years.

Destiny 2 concluded its live service with its final update, Monument of Triumph, on June 9. Concurrent with this announcement, Bungie also released Destiny 2: The Collection, a compilation of all available expansions and content packs for the game.
