Electronic Arts has announced leadership changes following its acquisition by Saudi Arabia, with EA Sports president Cam Weber stepping into the newly created role of president and chief operating officer. The former chief experiences officer has also been appointed president and chief operating officer. These appointments were detailed in a message to employees from CEO Andrew Wilson.
Wilson described the company as entering "one of the most exciting and transformative moments our industry has ever seen," a sentiment he linked to the potential of new technologies like AI to enhance game development and player experiences. He emphasized that EA's "greatest opportunity is to create what others haven't yet imagined," a guiding principle for the company's future.
However, the transition is also marked by expectations of significant layoffs as EA aims to manage the debt incurred from the acquisition. Investment in EA's growth, particularly in AI applications, has been confirmed by Silver Lake CEO Egon Durban, who noted this as a key focus for the new ownership.
The elevation of Weber, previously head of EA Sports, has led to speculation that the company may increasingly focus on its dominant franchises such as EA Sports FC and Battlefield, potentially at the expense of smaller-scale projects. This strategic direction is suggested by placing the head of a major sports division into an overarching operational role.
