Cygames Launches New Label to Release Up to Three Smaller Games Annually

Cygames has established CygamesEdge, a new publishing label dedicated to developing and releasing smaller, original games at a faster pace. The initiative stems from a perceived shift in player preferences away from exclusively AAA titles and towards more varied, shorter gaming experiences. The company aims to release between two and three games of a similar scope to its upcoming title, "Where the Seeds Fall," each year, with a target of completing development within three years of a project's start.

CygamesEdge was founded with the goal of creating games on an independent scale, utilizing smaller internal teams, though the company emphasizes it does not consider itself an indie developer. This approach is inspired by the success of indie titles that have achieved significant sales, sometimes surpassing those of major AAA projects. The director of CygamesEdge, Hamada Shouichiro, explained in interviews with Japanese media outlets that large-scale development often involves many years of work on content for a broad audience. However, this can limit innovation and risk-taking, creating an opportunity for smaller titles to experiment with new ideas.

Shouichiro highlighted a significant diversification in player expectations and habits in recent years. While AAA games maintain a strong presence, small-team-developed indie games are also experiencing global success. He noted that developers in their 30s and 40s, including himself, are increasingly seeking shorter gaming experiences due to time constraints from other responsibilities. This observation influenced the marketing of "Where the Seeds Fall," which prominently features its approximately three-hour playtime as a selling point. Furthermore, Shouichiro pointed out that over half of games sold on Steam are back-catalog titles, an area where Cygames, as a relatively newer company, aims to build a portfolio through CygamesEdge.

This move by Cygames mirrors a broader industry trend of companies funding smaller, potentially experimental projects with profits from their larger, established franchises. This strategy allows for the possibility of unexpected hits, similar to the success stories of recent indie games, and may lead to a wider variety of unique titles reaching the market.
