The new system prioritizes automatic age estimation using various account signals, such as account tenure and server memberships. Discord states this method achieves accuracy comparable to biometrics without analyzing user content like messages or calls. Accounts are categorized into three groups: adult, teen, and unconfirmed, with varying levels of restrictions. Users can check their assigned age group in their user settings.
For manual age verification, Discord has introduced additional options beyond facial scans or ID uploads. These include credit card verification via Stripe, Google Wallet ID pass, a credential called AgeKey, and the option to allow Apple App Store or Google Play Store to share logged age data. The availability of these methods may vary by region and device. Discord emphasizes that provided data is solely used for age determination and that users can select the method they are most comfortable with.
Discord has also published detailed documentation regarding its age assurance practices. This includes information on third-party vendors, the mechanics of its age estimation model, and its transparency reports. The company believes this global, privacy-focused approach will help preemptively address potential legal requirements for less privacy-conscious verification methods.
