Disney Plus Reportedly Considering Free Tier to Combat Rivals

Disney is reportedly in discussions about introducing a free, ad-supported tier for its Disney Plus streaming service. This move would aim to increase accessibility and compete more directly with established free streaming platforms such as YouTube and Tubi.

Adam Smith, Disney's chief product and technology officer, is said to have discussed the potential free plan during a streaming town hall on July 9. While no specific timeline or details regarding the scope of such a plan were revealed, it is understood to be part of ongoing internal deliberations on how to better engage with audiences.

Currently, Disney Plus offers ad-supported subscriptions for $11.99 per month and ad-free options for $18.99 per month. The service also offers bundled packages that include other streaming platforms like Hulu and HBO Max. Disney has also recently moved to consolidate Hulu's content within the main Disney Plus app.

The exploration of a free tier comes as subscription-based streaming services face increasing competition from free alternatives. YouTube and Tubi are highlighted as key rivals, with Fox investing heavily in its own free streaming service, Tubi, by acquiring Roku for $22 billion. Nielsen data from April indicated that Tubi, YouTube, and The Roku Channel collectively accounted for over 18% of U.S. television viewing time.

As the cost of traditional subscription streaming services continues to rise, the appeal of free, ad-supported options grows. While many paid services offer limited free trials, a completely free, content-accessible plan remains uncommon among major players like Netflix and Apple TV Plus. Should Disney successfully implement a free tier, it could provide a significant competitive advantage in the evolving streaming landscape.
