Disney+ is set to incorporate user-made content from TikTok into its platform, a move announced as a "first-of-its-kind global deal" designed to "open doors for the next generation of creators." This collaboration will bring "Verts," short-form vertical videos featuring fan content related to Disney brands such as Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and FX shows, to the streaming service.
Under the agreement, creators will gain access to a significant portion of Disney's back catalogue to produce videos. Disney stated that it will "thoughtfully curate" the selected content, implying a degree of editorial control over what is featured. This strategy allows Disney+ to acquire new content with minimal direct cost while offering creators a platform to reach a wide audience.
This initiative follows the collapse of a previous partnership with OpenAI. That deal, which reportedly would have involved a $1 billion investment, aimed to leverage OpenAI's Sora model for generating content based on 100 Disney characters. However, the collaboration dissolved when OpenAI shifted its focus away from the Sora project.
Asad Ayaz, Chief Marketing and Brand Officer for The Walt Disney Company, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, "The best storytellers are fans first... This collaboration creates a new bridge between the stories we tell and the creativity they inspire, giving creators a bigger stage to share what they’ve made, and audiences more to discover on Disney+ every day."
The announcement comes shortly after the cancellation of the Emmy-nominated series "Wonder Man," raising questions about the platform's future content strategy and quality standards. The exact guidelines for user submissions and the criteria for curation remain unclear.
