Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii has lauded the advancements in artificial intelligence, demonstrating how AI prompting can drastically accelerate game development. Horii recently shared a playable online prototype, a text-based interrogation game, which he stated was created in less than 30 minutes.
Horii detailed his experience on X, contrasting the current AI-assisted process with his early career. "Long ago, when I made ‘The Portopia Serial Murder Case’ on a PC, I came up with the story myself, drew the pictures myself, did the programming myself, and created the game all by myself," he explained. "And now, by using AI, even if I can’t draw pictures or program, I can just give instructions to the AI and create a decent game all by myself."
This is not the first time Horii has expressed enthusiasm for AI in game creation. In a previous interview, he indicated his intention to integrate generative AI into future projects. At 72, Horii remains deeply involved in the Dragon Quest series, with his company, Armor Project, co-owning the franchise.
In related news, Square Enix recently partnered with Google to introduce an AI-powered chatbot, Chatty Slimely, for its MMORPG Dragon Quest X. This feature is designed to assist players through text and voice, though it is currently exclusive to the Japanese version of the game.
