Developers behind Dungeons and Dragons, D&D Beyond, and Magic: The Gathering are in the process of unionizing, aiming to join the United Wizards of the Coast. This group, which also includes developers of Duel Masters, would expand the union's reach across nearly all Wizards of the Coast intellectual properties, excluding only Magic: The Gathering Online.
The United Wizards of the Coast, initially formed by Magic: The Gathering Arena developers earlier this year in partnership with the Communication Workers of America, released a statement emphasizing their role as stewards of these games. The union is advocating for protections against layoffs, improved wages, safeguards against artificial intelligence in game development, remote work stability, and full ownership of work created outside of WotC offices.
This new effort follows the successful union election by Magic: The Gathering Arena workers. United Wizards of the Coast is now calling for public support through a petition urging parent company Hasbro to voluntarily recognize their unionization drive. However, such voluntary recognition may be unlikely, given WotC leadership's previous actions, which included sending letters to Magic: Arena developers before their election, advising them to carefully consider the implications of unionization.
