Electronic Arts has officially launched EA Advertising, a new platform designed to enable brands to integrate their messaging and products directly into the gameplay experience across its portfolio of titles. The company states that this initiative will transform how brands connect with audiences through digital and real-world experiences.
Enhanced Player Experiences and New Ad Formats
EA describes these new placements as "interactive gameplay environments," with a particular focus on its EA Sports titles. The platform will offer "native ad units" such as billboards and scoreboards, mirroring real-world sports sponsorships. Beyond these familiar formats, EA is introducing a Partner Program that aims to move beyond traditional sponsorships into co-created fan experiences both within and around its games.
The publisher is also planning other forms of in-game brand advertising, including challenges, "reward-driven" objectives, and other branded gameplay content. A key feature highlighted is the ability for advertisers to respond to player engagement by updating objectives and introducing additional in-game content, such as cosmetic skins, as campaigns progress.
Evolution of In-Game Advertising at EA
This formal launch follows EA's long history of experimenting with in-game advertising. The company's efforts began nearly two decades ago with simple billboard ads in games like Burnout Paradise. More recently, EA has incorporated sponsored in-game challenges, such as a partnership with Red Bull for challenges in Battlefield 6. However, the company has also faced criticism, notably for the inclusion of full-screen, unskippable ads in UFC 4's action replays, which were later removed after fan backlash.
EA's decision to consolidate its brand advertising activities under the EA Advertising banner comes as the company indicated to investors in 2024 that advertising is viewed as a "meaningful driver of growth." This move also occurs amid broader industry discussions about the potential for ad-supported tiers in gaming services.
