EA Sports is set to launch EA Sports FC 27 with a tiered pricing strategy that includes a new, top-tier "Ultimate Plus" edition priced at $150. This comes on top of the standard $70 edition and the existing $100 "Ultimate" edition. For comparison, EA also offers an MVP bundle for its football titles at the same $150 price point, which includes both Madden NFL and College Football along with deluxe edition benefits.
The Ultimate Plus edition of EA Sports FC 27 bundles a substantial amount of downloadable content, including four premium season passes, 10,000 FC Points (the game's premium currency) to be distributed over several months, player boosts, and a Hall of FUT Player Pick. A significant incentive for this premium version is the ability to play the game seven days before its official release date, a feature that has become increasingly common in recent game launches.
EA Sports FC titles have historically faced criticism regarding progression systems that are perceived to be locked behind paywalls and overt pay-to-win mechanics within its Ultimate Team mode. These concerns were notably amplified with the release of EA Sports College Football, leading to player dissatisfaction. While EA has since removed some of the most contentious microtransaction systems, the Ultimate Team mode continues to feature numerous microtransactions.
There are also existing anxieties that these monetization strategies could intensify, especially considering EA's ongoing discussions for a potential $55 billion acquisition by a consortium of investors led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. This significant financial transaction could place substantial debt on the company, potentially leading to strategic shifts and restructuring across its game development studios.
