EA VP Sees 'Huge Opportunity' in Integrating Ads Early in Game Development

Electronic Arts is exploring new avenues for revenue with its in-game advertising platform, a move that EA VP of advertising and sponsorships Alexander Dao believes represents a significant opportunity for the entire gaming industry. Dao suggests that companies should consider advertising integration during the initial development stages of new games, rather than retrofitting it later.

"As you think about new games that are coming out, as you think about free-to-play experiences that are happening on the console side," Dao explained, "if you actually design them with the right advertising and brand experience in there from the get-go, it just makes it easier. It makes it feel more native and it creates more flexibility in the types of brands that can come in and out."

EA Advertising is integrated into the Frostbite engine, which powers titles like Madden and Battlefield. This platform aims to simplify the process of creating and tracking player engagement with custom ads for clients. The company states that advertisers can collaborate with EA in a privacy-safe manner to enhance targeting and gain campaign insights, with EA ensuring ads are viewable, delivered to real audiences, and measured using industry-accredited standards.

Early initiatives have included a custom Mountain Dew stadium experience in EA Sports College Football 2026 and Visa branding in EA Sports FC. Dao cited a successful activation with Lowe's, where sponsorship of the Stadium Pulse feature in college football reportedly garnered over a billion impressions. The success of these campaigns is measured by player engagement, discussion, and positive brand perception.

The discussion around ad-supported models in gaming surfaces as development budgets and component costs continue to rise. While some suggest this could help keep game prices down, the current focus is on lucrative franchises. Dao pointed to the broader trend of advertising following audience attention, citing the growth of social media, retail media, and connected TV as examples. He believes gaming, particularly console and HD gaming with its large, engaged audiences, presents a similar untapped advertising frontier, mirroring the monetization already seen on mobile platforms.
