Electronic Arts Takeover by Saudi-Led Group Nears Completion

Electronic Arts is poised to become a private company again next week as an investors' group, spearheaded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), finalizes its acquisition. According to a recent SEC filing, all necessary regulatory approvals for the merger have been secured, with the transaction anticipated to conclude by August 4, 2026. This development follows the European Union's recent approval of the $55 billion deal, which stands as one of the largest in the gaming industry's history.

Beyond the PIF, the consortium includes private equity firm Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, an entity founded by Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump's son-in-law. The buyout arrives during a challenging period for EA, marked by numerous layoffs and project cancellations in recent years. The company has increasingly concentrated resources on its flagship franchises, such as Battlefield.

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential influence of Saudi Arabia's government on the content and values of EA's games, particularly in series like The Sims. It remains to be seen how these concerns will manifest, if at all. The acquisition also occurs shortly after EA CEO Andrew Wilson received a substantial pay increase, despite widespread layoffs impacting staff responsible for the company's successful titles. The transition to private ownership will also bring significant debt, the management of which is currently unclear.
