Mike Brown, who spent nine years at Playground Games working on the Forza series before leaving to found Maverick Games, has offered his perspective on the recent turmoil within Xbox. He described the situation as "really sad and really, really unfortunate," particularly given the significant investment made in the Xbox Game Pass concept.
Brown noted that Game Pass's vision led to numerous studio acquisitions, game funding, and job creation, all centered around a steady stream of content for subscribers. However, he stated that the reality is that not enough people subscribed at the prices required to sustain the business model. "Unfortunately, it didn’t," he said, referring to the service's success in meeting its financial goals.
The recent strategic shifts at Xbox, including layoffs and studio closures, come after Game Pass saw subscriber numbers decline following a price increase intended to offset the cost of including titles like Call of Duty day one. While the price was later adjusted and the day-one commitment for the acquired shooter was removed, the company is now reportedly refocusing on its core franchises such as Halo, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Minecraft.
This situation represents a significant pivot from Xbox's nearly decade-long effort to grow Game Pass, which at one point aimed for over 100 million subscribers. Brown pushed back against the notion of placing blame on individuals like Sarah Bond, former Xbox president, suggesting that those criticizing her on social media do not understand her contributions or operational capacity. He described Bond as sharp, intelligent, and impressive, someone who inspired confidence through her competence.
