Mike Brown, the former director of Forza Horizon 5 at Playground Games, has shared his perspective on the challenges facing Xbox, particularly concerning the impact of Xbox Game Pass. Brown, who now leads development at Maverick Games, believes that the core concept of Game Pass was a positive initiative, but its execution was ultimately hampered by insufficient subscriber numbers.
"We invested a fortune in the concept of Game Pass as a service," Brown stated, referencing the significant capital poured into the service, which spurred studio acquisitions, game funding, and job creation. The vision was to consistently deliver new titles to subscribers, fostering a diverse gaming ecosystem. However, Brown explained that "the reality is not enough people have subscribed to it at the prices that they needed to pay in order to make that business viable."
This shortfall, he suggested, has directly contributed to recent studio closures and layoffs within Xbox. Brown described the situation as "sad" and a consequence of a "well-meaning player-focused concept of Xbox Game Pass not quite landing." Recent reports have indeed indicated that Game Pass subscriber targets have been missed, leading to strategic shifts, such as the backtracking on a price increase and the decision to delay the inclusion of new Call of Duty titles on the service.
Despite these outcomes, Brown defended the underlying idea of Game Pass. He acknowledged its potential to make games more accessible and to fund unique projects that might not otherwise see the light of day. Yet, the harsh truth, according to Brown, is that the subscription model did not achieve the necessary scale to meet Microsoft's aggressive expansion goals and acquisition strategies.
Brown also expressed admiration for Xbox's former leaders, including Sarah Bond, praising her intelligence and competence. As of now, Game Pass remains a central pillar of Xbox's strategy, though its future prominence is uncertain amid ongoing shifts in Microsoft's approach to console exclusives and multiplatform releases.
