Global Games Market Surpassed $200 Billion in 2025, Fueled by PC Growth

The global video game market achieved a record-breaking $201.6 billion in revenue for 2025, surpassing the $200 billion milestone for the first time. This marks a year-over-year increase of 9.1%, exceeding earlier estimates from market research firm Newzoo. The growth occurred despite a challenging industry landscape characterized by significant consolidation and widespread layoffs following a pandemic-era boom, as well as rising hardware costs.

PC gaming emerged as the primary driver of this expansion, recording its strongest growth rate to date at $43.6 billion, a 12.0% increase year-over-year. Newzoo attributes this surge to a diverse range of popular titles across various price points, from premium releases like Battlefield 6 to more accessible acclaimed games such as Clair Obscur. In-game purchases and microtransactions also contributed substantially, with titles like Roblox generating considerable revenue.

Console revenues, while higher in absolute terms at approximately $44.7 billion, saw a more modest growth rate of 2.8% year-over-year. Mobile gaming remains the largest segment, bringing in $113.3 billion, though its growth rate is slightly lower than that of the PC market.

Looking ahead, analysts anticipate Grand Theft Auto 6 to be a significant commercial catalyst in 2026. However, Newzoo forecasts that the PC market may not experience the same level of explosive growth in the upcoming year as it did in 2025, despite a packed release schedule for the latter half of the year. These financial successes stand in contrast to ongoing industry consolidation, with companies like Microsoft reportedly canceling games and restructuring studios, raising questions about the sustainable use of this revenue to advance the industry.
