A significant piece of comic book history, the opening splash page from 1968's Iron Man #1, is now up for auction. This page, created by penciller Gene Colan and inker Johnny Craig, represents the first visual introduction to Iron Man in his own comic series.
David Maisel, founding chairman of Marvel Studios, previously owned the artwork. He noted that Colan's art was both cinematic and expressive, almost anticipating the Marvel Cinematic Universe decades in advance. The combination of its status as the first page of the first issue, its nature as a large splash page, and Colan's artistic contribution made it a compelling acquisition.
The auction also features other significant comic art. Among these is Jerry Robinson's cover for 1942's Detective Comics #68, notable for being the second appearance of Two-Face and for its survival in excellent condition from the Golden Age. Additionally, Joe Shuster's cover art for 1940's Action Comics #22 is included.
Collectors can also find pages from Frank Miller's acclaimed Daredevil run in the 1980s. A cover by Jim Lee for 1992's X-Men #6 is also listed, currently drawing significant bids. The price for the Iron Man #1 page has already reached $6,750, with other pieces commanding substantially higher amounts, underscoring the high value placed on original comic art.
