Employees at King, the developer behind the immensely popular Candy Crush Saga, are preparing to strike next week. Unionen, Sweden's largest trade union, and the Swedish Engineers union have both issued strike notices against the company, citing a lack of progress in negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
The unions state that their members are seeking secure conditions, a voice in their workplace, and clear, universally applied rules. According to Unionen's LinkedIn post, a CBA encompasses more than just salary, covering crucial aspects such as pensions, insurance, working hours, and the ability for employees to influence their working conditions. This is considered a fundamental element of the Swedish labor market.
Discussions for a CBA have been ongoing for over a year. In June, King executives reportedly rejected the workers' requests, stating that the company's existing benefits and operating model were superior for its employees and suitable for its operations in Sweden. This refusal is the direct catalyst for the unions' decision to call for strike action.
Arbitrators are currently involved in mediating a potential solution between King and the unions. However, if an agreement is not reached by September 25th, the strike will commence. The Swedish Engineers union emphasized that a strike is not a decision taken lightly, but it is a necessary step to secure the conditions and influence their members at King desire.
