Kingdom Come: Deliverance Dev Hopes GTA 6 Will Spark Higher Game Prices

Warhorse Studios co-founder Martin Klima expressed a hope that Grand Theft Auto 6's upcoming launch will pave the way for increased pricing across the video game industry. Klima outlined what he sees as an existential challenge for triple-A game development: audience sizes have plateaued, traditional retail sales have diminished, and new revenue streams have not emerged to offset escalating development and marketing costs.

Klima specifically pointed to Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two as uniquely positioned to implement price hikes. "The last thing you can do is to increase the unit price," Klima stated in an interview with PC Gamer. "That would help a lot, but everybody's scared to death about it. Now, hopefully, GTA will blaze the trail, and it will allow us to increase the cost."

Despite this perspective on pricing strategy, Klima admitted that GTA 6 itself does not personally appeal to him, stating, "I am not going to be playing GTA 6 unless I'm somehow forced to." He added, "And the reason why it is so popular — it beats me. It's something which I just fail to understand."

In the UK, the Standard Edition of GTA 6 is priced at £69.99, which is standard for major triple-A releases. However, the US Standard Edition is set at $79.99, exceeding the typical new game price by $10. The Ultimate Edition, which includes additional in-game content, is priced at $99.99.

Previously, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed speculation surrounding GTA 6's price. He noted that consumers pay based on the value delivered, and the company's goal is to "charge way way way less of the value delivery." Zelnick emphasized the importance of creating "the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth, in history," believing that if the company serves its customers well, profitability will follow.

GTA 6 is widely anticipated to be the most expensive game ever developed, with estimates suggesting Take-Two has invested between $1 billion and $2 billion in its creation and promotion. A recent marketing event in Miami for the game reportedly cost $1 million.

Analysts project that GTA 6 will be the most popular entertainment launch of all time, with predicted sales of up to $5.2 billion by the end of its launch week. The game is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles on November 19.
