Warhorse Studios co-founder Martin Klima has expressed a desire for Grand Theft Auto 6 to set a precedent for higher game prices, which he views as essential for the survival of the industry. Despite admitting that the Grand Theft Auto series does not appeal to him personally, Klima hopes for GTA 6's massive success.
The Cost of Game Development
Klima highlighted the escalating costs associated with game development, noting that increasing computing power leads to greater complexity and scale, which in turn raises production expenses. He believes that current revenue streams are insufficient to support these rising costs, especially as audience growth has plateaued and digital marketplaces already maximize per-unit sales.
"The last thing you can do is to increase the unit price," Klima stated in an interview with PC Gamer. "That would help a lot, but everybody's scared to death about it. Now, hopefully, GTA will blaze the trail, and it will allow us to increase the cost."
He specifically pointed to Rockstar Games and Take-Two as entities capable of initiating such a price increase. "Rockstar and Take-Two are the only ones who can afford, or who can dare, to increase the price of games, which I think is long overdue and also necessary for this business to survive," Klima said. "So I wish them all the luck."
Industry Trends and Pricing
This sentiment echoes analysis from industry observers. In May, Bank of America Securities analyst Omar Dessouky suggested that a higher price for GTA 6 would benefit the entire industry. Take-Two confirmed in June that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch at $80, a $10 increase over the conventional price for major releases. While the standard edition is priced at $80, the Ultimate Edition, which includes significant additional content, is effectively positioned as a $100 product, further normalizing higher price points.
Klima's candid admission reflects a common reluctance within the industry to be the first to raise prices. The hope is that a highly anticipated and commercially successful title like Grand Theft Auto 6 will absorb the initial consumer pushback, making it easier for other studios to follow suit with increased pricing in the future.
