French video game developer Don't Nod, known for its work on the Life Is Strange series and Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, has issued a stark warning that it may cease operations beyond January 31, 2027. This declaration comes amidst a significant downturn in the studio's financial performance.
According to Don't Nod's financial report for the first half of 2026, the company experienced a 56% year-over-year decrease in total operating revenue. This decline was attributed to falling sales and rising development expenditures. The studio also pointed to broader industry challenges, describing the current video game market as one where "financing is highly selective," access to necessary resources for development is difficult, and achieving commercial success is increasingly arduous.
To address this precarious situation, Don't Nod is initiating a comprehensive "transformation project" aimed at ensuring its longevity. A key component of this strategy involves consolidating operations in France around a single production line. The studio hopes this will foster a consistent stream of projects and support its long-term growth. However, this restructuring could result in the elimination of up to 90 positions.
Don't Nod recently released the science fiction game Aphelion. While its central relationship was praised, critical reception was mixed, and sales reportedly did not meet expectations. Looking ahead, the studio is working on a project internally codenamed P14. Despite expressions of interest, P14 has not yet met its funding goals and has not been officially revealed.
With the January 2027 deadline approaching, the future of Don't Nod remains uncertain. It is unclear whether the studio will secure the necessary funding for P14 or if Aphelion will mark the end of its output. The studio's situation is compounded by the upcoming television series adaptation of Life is Strange, slated for release on Prime Video next year.
