Magic: The Gathering Dominates Hasbro's Profits, Exceeding $600 Million Quarterly Revenue

Hasbro's third quarter 2026 financial report reveals that Magic: The Gathering has achieved a record-breaking quarter, surpassing $600 million in revenue for the first time. The trading card game's success has made the Wizards of the Coast division, which also publishes Dungeons & Dragons, responsible for approximately 90% of Hasbro's total quarterly operating profits. This marks a significant 31% revenue increase for Wizards of the Coast year-over-year.

Strong Set Performance Fuels Growth

The impressive financial results were largely propelled by the performance of the two most recent Magic: The Gathering set releases: The Hobbit and Reality Fracture. Notably, The Hobbit set, despite its comparatively smaller card pool, has become the fourth best-selling Magic set in the game's history. This commercial success underscores the enduring appeal and significant market presence of Magic: The Gathering.

Organized Play Sees Reported Increase Amid Player Concerns

Beyond sales figures, Hasbro also reported a substantial 40% increase in organized play participation for Magic: The Gathering in the first nine months of 2026, compared to the entirety of 2024. This statement contrasts with ongoing sentiments among some players who have voiced concerns about the state of competitive play, citing rapid set release schedules and perceived insufficient prize support at events like Regional Championship Qualifiers (RCQs).

Fan discussions online suggest that the surge in organized play numbers may be attributed to the inclusion of all events run through the official Magic: The Gathering Companion app. Many local game stores utilize the app for running casual Commander games, which, while popular, represent a different segment of the player base than competitive tournaments. This distinction raises questions about whether the growth in participation directly reflects a healthier competitive scene.

As Magic: The Gathering continues its trajectory as a critical profit driver for Hasbro, the company faces the challenge of balancing its sales-focused strategy with the expectations of its long-standing player base. While collaborations and popular formats like Commander continue to attract new players and boost sales, addressing the concerns of the competitive community remains a key consideration for the future of the game.
