Marvel Comics is set to leave its long-standing New York City headquarters and relocate to Los Angeles, marking a significant geographical shift for the publisher. This move, slated for completion by July 2027, will bring the comics division into closer proximity with its film and television counterparts.
In an announcement to employees, Marvel's head of television, animation, comics, and franchise, Brad Winderbaum, and newly appointed general manager, comics and franchise, David Abdo, stated that consolidating creative teams in Los Angeles will foster greater collaboration and innovation. The transition impacts over 100 employees, who have a year to decide whether to relocate to California or pursue new career opportunities in New York.
Stephen Wacker has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief, succeeding C.B. Cebulski. Wacker, a veteran editor with experience on notable runs such as Mark Waid and Chris Samnee's Daredevil, the "Superior Spider-Man" era, and co-producing "Rocket & Groot," will lead the comics division. Cebulski will move to Japan to take on the role of Asia Originals editor for Marvel, focusing on the company's manga initiatives.
Founded in New York City in 1939 by Martin Goodman, Marvel Comics has been intrinsically linked with the city, which serves as the backdrop for many of its most famous characters, including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and Daredevil. While the publisher's physical presence will shift to the West Coast, its historical connection to New York remains a significant part of its identity.
