Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has expressed optimism about the Xbox division's future, stating his belief that the business will "return to growth" in fiscal year 2027. Speaking during a recent earnings call, Nadella acknowledged that strategic decisions have been made across content, platform, and operations to facilitate this long-term expansion. "We have the best IP in the industry and talented studios around the world, and believe we can bring these strengths together, and expect to return the business to growth in fiscal 2027," Nadella stated.
This outlook comes after a period of significant restructuring for Xbox, including layoffs affecting 1600 employees and the separation from several owned studios. Nadella referred to these actions as "necessary decisions" to "reset the business for long-term growth." While specific metrics for this projected growth were not detailed, the division is reportedly operating at a 3% profit margin, a figure that indicates profitability but not necessarily growth.
In contrast to his cautious tone this year, Nadella's remarks about Xbox in the previous fiscal year's earnings call were notably more effusive. He highlighted a substantial 500 million monthly active users across platforms, the success of titles like Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered, and the strength of franchises such as Call of Duty and Minecraft. Game Pass also reported nearly $5 billion in annual revenue for the first time. Despite Microsoft overall reporting a record fiscal year with revenue exceeding $331 billion, the company has implemented broader workforce reductions. Mixed performance metrics and recent strategic shifts suggest a complex environment for Xbox, with Nadella's latest statement signaling a focus on sustained recovery and future expansion.
