Microsoft May Accelerate Development of Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Halo

Microsoft is reportedly exploring ways to accelerate the development of key franchises such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Halo. A new report from The Information, via Reuters, suggests that the company is looking to focus resources on its biggest games. This initiative has reportedly been approved by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood, with the primary goal of speeding up the creation of future titles in these major series. The budgeting for this increased spending, however, has not yet been finalized.

This strategic shift comes as several of Xbox's most prominent franchises have experienced lengthy development cycles or periods of stagnation. It has been 11 years since the release of Fallout 4, and 15 years since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls VI was announced eight years ago, with only a brief teaser trailer released so far, and no official title.

The Halo franchise has also faced challenges. Since the establishment of 343 Industries to manage the series after Bungie's departure nearly 15 years ago, Halo has been described as "treading water." Halo Infinite, intended as a live-service future for the franchise, ceased new content updates in 2025, just four years after its launch. While annualized Bethesda RPGs are not anticipated, Microsoft appears keen to expedite the development timelines for its major titles.

In addition to focusing on game development, the report also indicates that Microsoft is contemplating significant changes to the Xbox division itself. The company has not ruled out the possibility of spinning off the Xbox division into a standalone company or operating it as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Furthermore, Microsoft is reportedly considering joint ventures with unnamed partners, which could facilitate a future sale of the division. While these discussions are not described as imminent, sources suggest that no options are off the table.

These potential moves come as Microsoft works to revitalize its gaming presence. The company has already begun to re-emphasize console exclusives, though the extent of this strategy remains unclear. Any significant restructuring, such as a division spin-off, could also lead to workforce reductions. While Microsoft possesses a strong portfolio of gaming intellectual property, its ability and willingness to leverage these assets effectively remain key questions.
