Polyarc, the studio renowned for its VR platforming series Moss, has announced it is ceasing operations after nearly 12 years in business. The closure comes just three months after the release of its latest game.
Founded in 2015, Polyarc distinguished itself in the virtual reality space by adapting classic third-person platforming mechanics. Their debut title, Moss, initially launched on PSVR before appearing on Steam in 2018. The game allowed players to control the mouse protagonist Quill while simultaneously acting as a 'Reader' who could interact with the environment and assist Quill through VR-specific controls. This innovative approach earned critical acclaim, with the studio and its sequel Moss: Book II accumulating over 160 awards and nominations.
Post-Moss Struggles
The studio later ventured into a PvP strategy spinoff, Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss, set in the same universe. However, this title did not gain significant traction. Polyarc faced further setbacks in 2025, experiencing a loss of funding for a mid-development project and failing to secure a crucial alternative funding deal with a publisher. These financial difficulties led to two-thirds of the staff being laid off earlier this year.
Polyarc's final release was Moss: The Forgotten Relic, a non-VR compilation of the first two Moss games and their expansion, co-developed with Blackbird Interactive. While the compilation received positive reviews, it was not enough to sustain the studio. "After nearly 12 years riding the joyous rollercoaster of emotions that is making video games, our time together has come to an end," the studio stated on LinkedIn. "As we wind down active development, we are saying our farewells to each other."
To aid its former employees, Polyarc has shared a Google spreadsheet containing contact information for the 30 developers affected by the closure, facilitating their transition to new opportunities. As the studio winds down, all Moss games, excluding Glassbreakers, are currently available at a discount. The VR versions of Moss and Moss 2 are half-price, and The Forgotten Relic is 20% off.
