Netflix has announced a substantial integration of generative AI tools into its production processes, with the technology reportedly used in approximately 300 of its shows and movies so far in 2026. The streaming service detailed this expansion in its second-quarter shareholder letter, highlighting its ambition to produce content more rapidly and affordably.
According to the letter, these AI tools are now an integral part of numerous projects, spanning from the initial concept and pre-visualization stages through filming and post-production. While AI is employed across various phases, its primary application is in post-production for the considerable number of titles utilizing the technology.
Netflix claims that generative AI has been instrumental in enhancing specific visual elements in productions such as The American Experiment and Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri. For instance, AI has been used to augment crowds, create historical battle sequences, and develop establishing shots for world-building. The company also asserted that in certain instances, key shots and sequences that might have been omitted due to cost or technical limitations under traditional methods were made possible through the use of GenAI.
Beyond content creation, Netflix is also implementing AI within its platform to refine user experience. The company plans to leverage large language models and AI to improve title discovery, gain a deeper understanding of member preferences, and enhance search functionality.
