Chosen, the company behind Nexus Mods, has acquired the community-run backend database SteamDB from its founders. The long-time operators of SteamDB cited burnout and a desire for a sustainable future for the service as reasons for the sale after 13 years.
SteamDB co-founder xPaw explained that the project, which began as a hobby, grew into a significant undertaking requiring substantial hours. The increasing workload, coupled with a perceived shift in the internet landscape, led to burnout and a search for a suitable successor. "After COVID and with the rise of AI, the internet we once loved is gone, and with it my passion," xPaw stated. "I have started experiencing burnout with the project, but I powered through."
The acquisition by Chosen is intended to ensure SteamDB continues to operate with a dedicated team and improved infrastructure, security, and scalability. Victor Folmann, CEO of Chosen, emphasized that SteamDB will retain its existing name, brand, community, and identity in the short term. He also noted that xPaw will collaborate with Chosen over the coming months to facilitate a smooth transition.
Chosen plans to invest in the site's development, potentially improving its browser extension, game coverage, and overall infrastructure. Unlike its previous reliance on donated Steam keys to track game files, Chosen will now fund keys itself for games that may not have been covered. While community contributions will remain important, the site's coverage will no longer depend solely on donations.
Looking ahead, Folmann indicated that Chosen will explore ways to integrate SteamDB and Nexus Mods, potentially helping users discover modding communities or streamlining mod installation. The company also intends to find sustainable revenue streams for SteamDB without resorting to intrusive advertising. Possible avenues include partnerships, integrations, and affiliate links with publishers.
