Ninja Theory, the studio behind the Hellblade series, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, DmC: Devil May Cry, and Heavenly Sword, is entering a consultation period that may lead to its closure. This move comes as part of a broader wave of layoffs impacting Xbox studios.
According to an Xbox Wire blog post by CCO Matt Booty, the decision stems from two separate agreements for Ninja Theory falling through. "We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward," the post stated.
While Ninja Theory had initially seemed safe from previous Xbox cuts in July, reportedly being sold to an unnamed buyer, that deal has now apparently collapsed. This leaves the studio without an owner and unable to continue operations.
The studio was actively developing Senua, a new installment in the Hellblade series, which was announced in June during an Xbox Games Showcase. This new title was described as a larger and more expansive game than its predecessors. Microsoft had placed Ninja Theory up for sale within a month of Senua's reveal.
Xbox CCO Matt Booty emphasized support for affected employees, stating, "Today, our focus should be on supporting those affected and treating one another with care and respect." He also mentioned plans to meet with studios and reflect on progress during an upcoming All-Xbox team town hall.
Ninja Theory has a history of notable releases, including the critically acclaimed Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Other games from the studio include Disney Infinity: 3.0, Bleeding Edge, and Dexed.
