Despite not being a dedicated gamer himself, Barker finds the source material in video games often presents compelling concepts for cinematic adaptation.
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Barker reflected on the potential of video games as film material. He noted that while "Five Nights at Freddy's" might have been a project he would have approached differently, it represents the kind of concept he finds intriguing for adaptation. Barker also discussed his conversations with fellow director Zach Cregger, praising Cregger's approach to a "Resident Evil" film that aims to capture the spirit of the games rather than adhering to a specific plot.
Barker's own career trajectory, which began in sketch comedy before moving into horror thrillers, shares similarities with Cregger's path. Barker identified Naughty Dog's "Uncharted" series as his personal favorite video game, although an adaptation of that franchise has already been released.
Another director, Kane Parsons, known for "Backrooms," has also expressed interest in creating a video game movie, specifically mentioning Valve's "Portal" as a potential project.
