PlayStation and Take-Two Execs Weigh In on AI's Role in Game Development

Sony's top executive, Hiroki Totoki, stated that artificial intelligence will not replace humans in game development, emphasizing that creativity remains a human domain. "Creativity is for humans, not AI,” Totoki said, as reported by IGN. He elaborated that while encouraging the use of AI technology, Sony aims to protect the rights of creators and artists.

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that while AI itself may not replace developers, individuals who fail to adopt AI tools might be surpassed by those who do. Zelnick described AI as a collection of backward-looking datasets and large language models, contrasting this with creativity, which he believes is inherently forward-looking. "Creativity, at its best, is forward-looking," he remarked. According to Zelnick, truly original and unexpected ideas arise from human creative choices, not algorithms. He cited the film Home Alone as an example of an unexpected success that defied algorithmic prediction.

Both Sony and Take-Two are actively incorporating AI into their operations. PlayStation utilizes AI extensively in its game development processes, while Take-Two employs the technology for workflow improvements. However, Take-Two has confirmed that AI is not being used in the development of Grand Theft Auto 6.

The integration of AI in game development has been met with significant opposition from both players and developers, who have voiced concerns regarding job security, intellectual property rights, and the potential for increased automation to devalue creative work.
