Pope Francis has been presented with a symbolic orb by a Vatican-affiliated nonprofit called Saint Peter for Humanity. The group, dedicated to preserving and promoting humanity's heritage, gifted the orb to His Holiness as a representation of retaining human essence in an era increasingly defined by artificial intelligence.
This initiative follows Pope Francis's recent encyclical, "Magnifica Humanitas," where he advocated for AI to be "disarmed" to prioritize the human person over machines. He clarified that this call does not entail rejecting technology but preventing it from overpowering humanity.
Olivier François, head of Saint Peter for Humanity, described the orb as a Murano glass piece, hand-blown and imperfectly shaped, symbolizing the human touch. "The sphere is a Murano sphere, so it’s blown by hand, and the breathing of humans, the symbolism of the sphere is that it’s a perfect shape, but executed in a very imperfect way, which is the human way, because humans breathe, robots don’t breathe, and this ability to breathe helps us create beautiful things, which are not always perfect but so much more beautiful," François explained in a video shared with Fox News.
While the orb's exact purpose or the specific 'spell' it represents, reminiscent of Final Fantasy's Materia, remains a subject of lighthearted speculation, its deeper meaning lies in its connection to the ongoing dialogue about technology and humanity. The organization behind the gift, Saint Peter for Humanity, aims to preserve and share cultural, spiritual, and material heritage for the common good. The inclusion of notable figures such as Kimbal Musk on its board has also drawn attention, though the primary message of the gift centers on the human element in technological advancement.
