Qualcomm Secures $2 Legal Victory Against Arm in Licensing Dispute

Qualcomm has secured a $2 legal decision against rival tech giant Arm following a years-long dispute over licensing agreements. A Delaware jury determined that Arm breached its contract with Qualcomm by failing to provide necessary patches and support for licensed technologies. The jury also found that Arm intentionally interfered with a potential deal between Qualcomm and Meta in 2024.

The core of Qualcomm's argument was that Arm acted in bad faith after licensing its technology. A significant outcome Qualcomm sought was a five-year pause on royalty payments, a provision that could amount to billions of dollars. While the jury awarded Qualcomm $1 for the breach of contract and $1 for interference with the Meta deal, it ruled in Arm's favor on five other counts.

Both companies declared victory following the verdict. Qualcomm highlighted the jury's findings that Arm breached its agreement and acted to disrupt Qualcomm's business. Arm, in turn, emphasized that the jury's minimal award of $2 confirmed Arm's good faith and the limited merit of Qualcomm's broader claims. Arm stated that the jury's decision "confirms that Arm operated in good faith under its technology license agreement and its award of only two dollars confirms the merit of Arm’s arguments in the case."

Qualcomm, with a market cap of approximately $210 billion, and Arm, valued at around $243 billion, are pivotal players in the processor market. Qualcomm's Snapdragon CPUs are prevalent in non-Apple smartphones, and Arm's architecture forms the basis of these processors. The outcome of this dispute could have broader implications for the future of computing, with Arm technology increasingly eyed for potential in desktop and gaming systems.
