Reddit is planning to transition to a "logged-in only experience," a significant change that will begin with testing in regions outside the U.S. before a global rollout. The company's CEO, Steve Huffman, stated that this move is partly a response to a decline in search engine referrals, which he attributes to the rise of AI summaries that provide answers without requiring users to visit external sites.
During a recent investor call, Huffman noted that Reddit lost approximately one million search engine referrals per week on average in October. He explained that search engines like Google have altered their relationship with the internet, often presenting information directly rather than linking to sources. To counteract this, Reddit intends to cultivate the site as a "direct daily habit" for its users, reducing its reliance on search traffic.
To achieve this, Reddit is focusing on several initiatives. These include refining algorithmic feeds, enhancing the performance and design of its mobile applications, implementing AI-powered moderation tools, and introducing new features such as games and visual podcasts. The latter refers to an experimental feature that uses generative AI to transform posts into video content.
Huffman also emphasized that the shift to a logged-in only experience is crucial for "protecting access to Reddit's extremely valuable corpus of data." This data is a key asset for AI training, and Reddit currently has agreements with AI companies like OpenAI and Google. While no new deals were announced, Huffman confirmed that the company is engaged in "active discussions" regarding its data and AI partnerships, prioritizing strategic and economic interests.
Despite reporting a 53% year-over-year revenue growth and a 16% increase in weekly active users for the third quarter of 2026, Reddit's stock price saw a decrease following a less optimistic forecast for the upcoming quarter. The platform's future strategy appears centered on strengthening its core user engagement and exploring new avenues for content presentation and AI integration.
