Reddit is shifting to a "logged-in only experience" for browsing, a move that will begin with testing in other countries in the fourth quarter before a global rollout in 2027. The company stated this change is necessary to protect "the Reddit corpus of data," implicitly linking the decision to the increasing use of AI search tools, such as Google's AI Overviews, which reportedly "rob the platform blind" by consuming its content without direct benefit to Reddit.
Reddit cofounder Steve Huffman explained during a quarterly earnings call that while AI search is powerful, it addresses a different need than Reddit's core function of fostering community and connection. He noted that AI lacks the context and nuance found in human interaction. Despite this strategic shift, Reddit's stock experienced a sharp decline of over 25 percent in after-hours trading, even as the company reported growth in revenue and profits during the third quarter and claimed logged-in users already constitute 80 percent of its monetization.
This transition away from open browsing could fundamentally alter Reddit's identity as the "front page of the internet," potentially leading to a substantial decrease in casual users seeking quick answers to diverse questions. The decision comes despite Reddit having previously established data licensing agreements with companies like OpenAI and Google. The current move suggests a potential conflict where the AI companies that were granted access to Reddit's data for training now pose a threat to the platform by cannibalizing its traffic and search utility, rather than fostering a symbiotic relationship.
Reddit is not alone in its efforts to curb the widespread scraping of its data by AI bots. Similar measures, like Amazon blocking AI agents from purchasing items, highlight a broader industry trend of platforms attempting to regain control over their digital assets in the face of rapidly advancing AI capabilities. The underlying challenge for AI development remains how to generate significant value without relying on the free consumption of existing online content.
