Samsung Predicts Continued RAM Shortage Through 2027

Samsung expects the global RAM shortage to intensify through 2027, with supply chain constraints potentially lasting until 2028 at the earliest, according to statements made during the company's Q2 earnings call. These projections suggest that the current memory crisis is unlikely to abate in the near future.

Industry analysts report that artificial intelligence firms have been actively communicating their long-term demand forecasts to memory manufacturers like Samsung. This proactive engagement aims to secure future supplies of high-capacity RAM essential for AI development and data centers. While this demand benefits Samsung by enabling long-term contracts and ensuring financial stability, it also means that the company has less incentive to prioritize or reduce prices for consumer-grade RAM used in devices such as PCs and smartphones.

The ongoing focus on AI demand has contributed to accusations that Samsung and its competitors, SK Hynix and Micron, are engaging in price-fixing and supply manipulation. A US lawsuit currently alleges that these companies have not only benefited from the surge in AI server demand but have also failed to address the consumer market's need for more affordable RAM, thereby exacerbating the shortage for everyday electronics.

While Samsung's financial outlook might be bolstered by these trends, its public statements during an earnings call are primarily intended to assure shareholders of profitability. Nevertheless, the broader market indicators offer little immediate hope for a swift resolution to the memory component shortage affecting various technology sectors.
