Samsung Warns Memory Shortages Will Worsen, Potentially Driving Up Tech Prices Further

The ongoing global shortage of memory chips is expected to intensify in the coming years, according to Samsung, one of the world's largest memory manufacturers. The company predicts that increased demand, particularly from artificial intelligence companies, will exacerbate supply constraints and lead to further price hikes on a wide range of consumer electronics, including gaming consoles, PCs, and smartphones. Samsung anticipates that this high-demand, low-supply situation will persist until at least 2028.

Samsung shared its outlook during its second-quarter earnings call, noting that AI firms are actively communicating their long-term supply needs. This direct insight into future demand, coupled with Samsung's significant market share—producing approximately one-third of the global memory chip supply—provides a grim forecast for the availability and cost of memory. The shortage, sometimes referred to as "RAMageddon," has already been a key factor in rising tech prices over the past 16 months, affecting consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation, as well as Apple devices. Even niche markets, such as retro gaming hardware, have seen price increases as manufacturers struggle to secure essential components.

While the shortage presents challenges for consumer device availability, it appears to be financially beneficial for Samsung. The company is reportedly prioritizing larger clients who are willing to sign long-term contracts to guarantee future memory chip supplies. This strategy may put smaller manufacturers, such as Valve, in a difficult position, potentially forcing them to pay significantly higher prices for RAM or risk losing access altogether. The situation suggests a challenging period ahead for consumers hoping for a stabilization or reduction in tech prices in the near future.
