Mobile gaming company Scopely has announced a strategic investment in Studio AuKnow, a new development studio founded by Takuma Akitsu, the former director of the popular mobile game Umamusume: Pretty Derby. This move signifies Scopely's ongoing commitment to long-term investment within the Japanese market.
Studio AuKnow is comprised of experienced mobile game developers. In addition to Akitsu, who helmed Umamusume: Pretty Derby until 2024, the studio's staff includes individuals with past work on titles such as Pokémon Pocket, Onmyoji, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Sonic World Adventure. The company is currently developing a new mobile intellectual property and is actively recruiting for various positions.
Scopely, which is owned by Saudi Arabian investment firm Savvy Games Group, has been actively expanding its presence in the mobile gaming sector. This investment follows Scopely's acquisition of Niantic for $3.5 billion in 2025. The Savvy Games Group's broader investment strategy includes significant financial plays within the games industry, aligning with the growing popularity of mobile gaming, particularly in the MENA region.
Saudi Arabia's fiscal outreach into various industries, including video games, has drawn criticism from humanitarian groups concerned about the country's human rights record. These investments are seen by some as an effort to enhance the kingdom's global image for tourism and investment.
