Skydance Acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery Leaves Gaming Future Uncertain

Paramount's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, now consolidated under the Skydance banner, has concluded, yet the official announcement of the $111 billion deal makes no specific reference to the company's extensive video game division. This omission is particularly noteworthy given Warner Bros. Discovery's significant investment in gaming, leaving stakeholders and observers to question what lies ahead for its gaming properties.

Skydance CEO David Ellison has stated his personal interest in gaming, but it remains unclear if this will translate into a strategic focus for the newly formed company. The acquisition process itself was complex, with Netflix initially securing the top bid before Skydance presented a more comprehensive offer to purchase the entire company. Skydance's press release highlighted plans for a minimum of 30 "high-quality" films annually and emphasized a "creative-first, audience-focused, tech-forward, and globally scaled" operational model. While the release broadly mentions offering content across "every entertainment vertical," it lacks specific details regarding video games.

This silence echoes a similar situation when Netflix was planning its acquisition; at that time, the streaming giant downplayed the significance of video games, despite the commercial success of titles like 2023's Hogwarts Legacy, which sold over 30 million copies.

Skydance's announcement did acknowledge challenging times ahead for employees, with plans for at least $6 billion in "run-rate synergies within three years." These savings are anticipated to primarily stem from efficiencies in "technology, integration and procurement, marketing and real estate rationalization." Such corporate mergers frequently result in job reductions, a trend observed in previous acquisitions like Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard.

The newly formed Paramount Games Studio now oversees existing projects from Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media, including Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra and a new Star Wars game developed by Lucasfilm's Amy Hennig. Skydance now inherits ownership of numerous prominent gaming franchises and studios. This includes Avalanche Software, the developer of Hogwarts Legacy, and its publishing label Portkey Games; NetherRealm Studios, known for Mortal Kombat; and Rocksteady Studios, creators of the Batman: Arkham series. Additionally, TT Games, the developer behind Lego titles, and various other WB Games studios in Boston, Montreal, New York, and San Francisco, now fall under Skydance's purview. Beyond game development, Skydance is also producing a Call of Duty movie slated for release in 2028.
