Sony is generating 59% more revenue from each active PlayStation user now compared to the PlayStation 4 generation, according to data compiled by Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research and Insights at Niko Partners. This increase translates to an additional $230 spent by the average active PlayStation user in fiscal year 2025 compared to 2018.

Ahmad shared his findings on X, noting that the average annual revenue per active PlayStation user grew from 23,580 Yen in FY2018 to 37,485 Yen in FY2025. While growth has been relatively flat over the past one to two years, the overall increase represents a significant jump. Ahmad attributed this growth to several factors, including the transition to higher PlayStation Plus tiers, increased spending on game software and microtransactions, and higher hardware prices.

He further elaborated that FY19, which includes the period up to March 2020, saw a boost in active users partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The current trend suggests that Sony may not need to heavily market the PlayStation 5 as aggressively as consoles in the past, given its increased profitability per user. This comes at a time when Sony is also phasing out physical game disc support in 2028, a move that has drawn criticism from some segments of the gaming community.
