Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that physical disc production for new PlayStation console games will cease in January 2028. This decision reflects a significant shift in consumer behavior, with digital game sales increasingly outpacing physical media.
According to Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, new games will be available exclusively in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and at retailers from the specified date. This transition aims to align the company with current player preferences for accessing and playing games. Sony stated that this move will enable a greater focus on innovation in game accessibility and player choice.
Piers Harding-Rolls, a games industry analyst at Ampere, described the announcement as a "watershed moment for the industry." Harding-Rolls noted that while console gaming has been the last bastion for physical media, its importance has steadily declined. Data from Ampere indicates that in 2013, only 13% of total full game unit sales for Sony consoles were digital. By 2025, this figure is projected to reach nearly 80%.
Concerns have been raised by PlayStation gamers regarding choice, access to older physical titles on new hardware, the ability to collect physical games, and overall game preservation. However, industry trends suggest these purchasing habits are a clear indicator of future market direction.
The timing of Sony's announcement follows Rockstar's decision not to release a physical disc version of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is slated for release in November. Instead, Rockstar will offer a physical product containing only a download code. This approach mirrors Sony's future strategy for all new PlayStation game releases.
This change will not affect games already released or those scheduled for release before January 2028 in disc format. Sony also recently announced the closure of its PlayStation Store on PS3 and Vita in certain regions.
