Steam Deck's CAD Files Release Sparks Accessory Innovation

Valve has released the CAD files for its Steam Deck VR headset, opening the door for a wave of community-driven accessory development. The files, published on Valve's GitLab, allow users with 3D printing and manufacturing capabilities to create custom hardware for the device, though these creations must remain non-commercial.

Even before the official release of the CAD data, early Steam Deck recipients were already experimenting with homemade accessories. These range from functional items designed to enhance the headset's usability to more eccentric creations.

Among the practical innovations is a back-mounted power bank holder designed to extend the headset's limited battery life without adding weight to the front of the device. This addresses a key weakness of the Steam Deck, offering an alternative to head-mounted battery solutions. Additionally, numerous 'HackStrap' variants have emerged, providing alternatives to the official, and relatively expensive, ergonomic controller strap upgrades. Some makers have developed custom straps with a distinct industrial aesthetic.

More unconventional designs include 3D-printed light blocker extensions, intended to improve immersion by preventing external light from entering the headset. However, the texture of components produced by lower-end 3D printers may be a consideration for comfort. Another unique accessory is a controller chest rig, which, despite its questionable practical application in VR gameplay, offers a novel way to store and access the controllers. The design's own description notes its loose fit and sharp edges.

Other notable community creations include a patterned front cover that offers protection against scratches while leaving the onboard cameras unobstructed. A gamepad coupler has also been developed, enabling users to combine the Steam Deck controllers. This could be useful for playing traditional flat-screen Steam games on the headset or as an alternative for those who may not have purchased a separate Steam Controller.

Perhaps the most striking example of community creativity is a display stand shaped like a melting skull. This functional stand not only holds the Steam Deck but also serves as a distinctive decorative piece. The creator has even added options to integrate controller storage within the skull design, highlighting the community's commitment to developing unique and functional accessories for the VR headset.
