Steam Sees Surge in AI-Disclosed Games, Raising Quality and Ethical Concerns

Steam has seen a significant increase in games disclosing the use of artificial intelligence in their development, with more than 120 of the 338 titles released in the week ending June 14 reporting AI involvement. This trend raises questions about game quality, development ethics, and the potential for scam-like releases.

While many developers use AI for smaller tasks like generating store page assets or aiding in localization, a notable number of games are employing AI for core creative elements such as artwork, music, and narrative. "Android Who Dreams of Stars," for instance, uses AI-generated content for its artwork, sound, story, and localization. Similarly, "My Summer Love Memories" relies on generative AI for its videos, images, music, and even dialogue, with its text composed by a large language model.

Some releases have drawn particular scrutiny due to their pricing and extensive AI disclosures. "Kryonull," a visual novel with AI-generated voices, is priced at $100, leading to speculation about its true purpose. Developers like SmogGames and KalendulaGames have also released multiple titles with significant AI content disclosures and high price points, such as $100 or $110, with disclosures indicating that all or most images were AI-generated.

An AI disclosure on Steam is intended to cover AI-generated content that is consumed by players. However, the interpretation and application of this guideline vary among developers. Some use the disclosure box to downplay AI's role, stating that AI was used only for reference or for non-game elements like logos, while others provide comprehensive details about AI integration. The variety of disclosures suggests a lack of standardized practice regarding AI transparency on the platform.

The broader implications of widespread AI adoption in game development are a concern. While AI can expedite certain aspects of creation, the extensive use for core assets like music and narrative raises quality control issues and impacts human professionals employed in these fields. The rise of what has been termed the "slopscape" suggests a growing segment of games that may not be designed for genuine playability but rather for automated generation and potentially deceptive monetization.

Beyond AI disclosures, the Steam charts for the week ending June 9 revealed strong performances from established titles like "Counter-Strike 2" and "Forza Horizon 6." Notably, "Gothic 1 Remake" saw significant success, selling 500,000 copies and achieving nearly 78,000 peak concurrent players, indicating strong reception, particularly in Europe. The consistent presence of the Steam Deck on bestseller lists is attributed to stock replenishment and its higher price point compared to typical game releases.
