Supermassive Games, the studio behind titles such as Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, has announced that it is beginning redundancy consultations that could affect up to 75 of its staff. This decision follows closely on the heels of the studio's latest horror release, Directive 8020, which launched just three months prior.
This marks the third instance of substantial layoffs at the UK-based developer in recent years. Previous rounds of job cuts occurred in early 2024 and again in July of last year, with an estimated 90 workers losing their positions in the latter instance. The studio stated that these measures are a "necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company" and acknowledged the decision was "difficult."
The gaming industry has seen widespread workforce reductions, with thousands of employees impacted globally. Supermassive Games is not alone in its staffing reductions. Recent examples include ZA/UM, which laid off 30 developers following the release of Disco Elysium successor Zero Parades, and Microsoft, which implemented thousands of job cuts. In the past week alone, Crossfire studio That’s No Moon reduced its staff by 14 employees, Quantic Dream faced calls for strike action related to planned cuts affecting 115 jobs, and Halo Studios terminated a senior contractor shortly after the launch of the Halo: Campaign Evolved remake.
