Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has openly admitted that the recent Borderlands movie was a significant failure. Speaking at Business Insider Live, Zelnick stated, "We failed" in the context of the film's box office performance and its ability to meet the company's ambitious entertainment standards. He clarified that while Take-Two did not incur direct financial losses due to Lionsgate funding the production, the project did not achieve its goal of being "the best entertainment on Earth."

Zelnick emphasized Take-Two's commitment to producing high-quality entertainment adaptations, noting that the company is highly selective about which franchises it brings to other media. He stated that the company's mission is to "make the best entertainment on Earth," and the Borderlands movie did not meet this benchmark. "Culture, like character, is tested in the breach," Zelnick remarked, suggesting that challenging projects reveal a company's true commitment to its mission.

Despite the setback with the Borderlands film, Take-Two remains engaged in transmedia efforts. A BioShock movie is reportedly in development at Netflix, with Francis Lawrence attached to direct.
